Saw palmetto and DHT: what the human evidence actually shows.

Interesting mechanism. Small hair study. Useful context. Absolutely not permission to call a cosmetic “natural finasteride.”

Bottom line: saw palmetto has biologically plausible 5-alpha-reductase activity and limited human AGA evidence. The evidence base is far weaker than established drug therapies, and the key studies are not clinical trials of topical Scalp Defense Oil.

Why saw palmetto entered the DHT conversation

Liposterolic saw palmetto extracts contain fatty acids and phytosterols that have been investigated around androgen metabolism. That makes the ingredient scientifically interesting. It does not automatically make every saw-palmetto hair product effective.

The 2001 tissue-DHT study

A randomized trial in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia reported a 32% reduction in prostatic tissue DHT in the saw-palmetto herbal-blend group, while placebo showed no significant change. That supports a 5-alpha-reductase-related mechanism.

But the tissue was prostate tissue, not scalp. The intervention was not Scalp Defense. Using “32%” as if it were a measured scalp-DHT reduction from this bottle would be false.

The 2002 androgenetic-alopecia pilot

A double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot enrolled men with mild-to-moderate AGA and tested a botanical formulation containing a liposterolic saw-palmetto extract plus beta-sitosterol. The investigators rated 6 of 10 actively treated subjects as improved.

That is a positive signal, but the sample was tiny and the formulation was not topical Scalp Defense Oil. The study is better described as “early human evidence” than “clinical proof.”

So what can Alrénza responsibly say?

We can say that saw palmetto has been investigated in relation to 5-alpha-reductase and androgenetic alopecia. We can say Scalp Defense contains 8% saw palmetto CO₂ extract. We cannot honestly state that this finished formula lowers scalp DHT by a known percentage or replaces finasteride.
